NBA2016-17球季26日正式開打，尋求衛冕的騎士球員在主場獲得冠軍戒，隨後靠著「小皇帝」詹姆斯的大三元，117比88大勝尼克；上季寫下73勝、開季24連勝的勇士，卻踢到大鐵板，100比129慘敗給馬刺。
為避開MLB世界大賽，騎士特地將比賽提前1小時，讓觀眾收看他們賽前領取冠軍戒指的典禮，詹姆斯也在他的好友「甜瓜」安森尼面前領取他的第3枚冠軍戒。
詹姆斯14投9中，19分、11籃板、14助攻，大三元輕鬆到手，同時也是2005-06球季奇德之後，第一位在開幕賽就有大三元表現的球員。
全場攻下29分的厄文，光是第三節的19分就足以幹翻尼克，也幫助上半場只領先3分的騎士，打完三節將差距擴大至18分，決勝節再一騎絕塵，最終以29分之差狠狠咬了大蘋果一口。
杜蘭特絲毫沒有出現適應不良的情況，開賽後連續破網攻下9分，全場27分、10籃板最高，史提芬柯瑞26分，卓雷蒙格林18分、12籃板、6助攻、5抄截，克雷湯普生11分，四巨頭合力攻下82分，其他9位球員只合計得到18分，出現極大落差。
進入後鄧肯時代的馬刺，保羅蓋索僅得4分，主控帕克也只進9分，不過，里歐納德勇冠三軍，豪取35分、5籃板、5抄截，艾卓吉26分、14籃板，二年級生強納生西蒙斯手感發燙貢獻20分，米爾斯11分，吉諾比利10分。
